what the wall st. insiders are up too. the rest of use are in the market to be mined. a collection of investors would find that the great investors are right, but not at the same time. some one will be hot for a year or two. then its back to no better than any one. the market is not smart. if it was they would be no way to make money on any thing but on what the stock payed. every one would know about ups and downs

Maybe I have been reading Dilbert and your blogs too long, but it seems to me that the most valuable information in the world would be the "dirt" on everyone with money. Who needs a group or investments? The dirt keeps building and the rich would pay handsomely to keep it buried. Let everyone else work hard... a few well placed threats of leaking those secrets would keep you wealthy enough to live well and prove to be invaluable.

Thonas Sowell talks about the Cost of Knowledge in his great economic books.

I think it's inside information about how legislative and bureaucratic decisions, especially to allocate funding, are made. very complex, leave the average citizen in the dark as to who to blame, and are worth, well, now trillions. This is why there are growing numbers of specialist lobbyists, who work in government for low pay, but end up rich by later working outside government.

Asking a random sample what stocks they like tomorrow is not what they would like the next day, so you're not going to see a preview of what the markets will actually buy. If that were true, you could ask the same sample what stocks they like one week from now, and get ready for the boom.

Ravenblack, I've used solar stills, and they are not the solution. The ground that it's in dries up after you use it for a couple of days, and you get no more water out of it except what you put into it, in the form of, eg., plants. So every morning you go gather a bunch of plants, take apart your still, put them in, put it back together, and at the end of the day you have a cup of water.

I like the question but I kind of don't like your priming answer. I just feel there is too much value placed on this trade advantage / market stuff. Could we not return to values that involve actually creating or achieving things? Depends on your values I guess.

According to me, that would be:

1. How to do what we do today with minimal environmental impact.
2. How to do what we do today with minimal global economic differences.

This can give us really long time sustainability. The problem with concentrating critical resources is that it is highly prone to nature's vagaries.

http://dilbert.com/blog/entry/32749

Without self knowledge, knowledge of other things is basically in the hands of a fool -- and therefore largely useless. That's all I meant when I said that self knowledge is the most important information available to us. It's a threshold condition thingie -- a gateway to dealing with other information intelligently ... maybe even wisely?

However, knowing whether or not a "hot chick" is "digging on me" is definitely an intriguing alternative to my proposition. ;-)
