First of all I think that this article is rather ridiculous. I don't agree at all with what you say that men are round pegs that and society only provides square holes. That clearly is not the case because there is a much larger majority of men who do not part take in raping women. As far as why people are posting stuff like there junk on twitter and over the internet; people are doing that because they can it is as simple as that. They think that it is funny or whatever.

Further more I don't understand your idea behind Hugh Hefner. That does not support what you are trying to explain in fact it works against you. You said that Hugh got married and it didn't work so he was a round peg that was put in a square hole. But thenwas still you say that he was unhappy when he went back to the single life. Being Hugh Hefner that means that he had hot women around him 24/7. He was sleeping with anyone and everyone that he wanted to. You argue that men can't express themselves sexually and freely because society restricts it, but Hugh Hefner shows you that sleeping around with women all day is not going to make you happy either. By your assessment neither multiple sexual partners or marriage is the "round hole" that fits the round peg. Which leads me further to believe that either you are suggesting that rape is the round hole or there is no round hole and men can not be completely satisfied.

I think that the pigs that go out and rape women aren't doing it because they are deprived of sex. They are doing it because they are bored with sex. They need something new and extreme. They can't get their rocks off with out it. It is no longer about making a connection with someone it is about the thrill and the intensity about over whelming someone and being in complete dominant control.

These men are disgusting and what they do is ridiculous. The reason that we don't blame animals for killing one another because they don't know any better. That is what they do. Being a higher species means that we have the ability to choose between right and wrong and knowing when you have to control yourself.

Also, your point about chemical castration and what not. That will not solve any problems. that doesn't fix the problem it masked and tries to subdue problems. Trying to control something like that is out of the question. Chemical castration is already here. Some sex offenders have to go on chemical castration treatments to help manage their sex drive. It doesn't always work.

Society is not to blame for the unhappiness of men. If men want to go around sleeping with who ever they want they can.....they do. Maybe there is too much sex and that is why they need newer and more dangerous act. Even if you think rape is wrong you should not be trying to justify and tone rape down and taking blame away from the rapist and displacing it else where...like society.

Sorry, Scott, but this post is, at best, a little bizarre. The lion kills the zebra to eat to survive. That's, er, a little different from your men-behaving-badly behaviors, in which you have conflated some offenses that hardly stand up to such conflation (tweeting one's junk and commiting rape are very different offenses). Were you playing DMD with people who like to take your words out of context? Even in context, I must confess that this post doesn't make sense to me (unless you're baiting people, in which case you've done a wonderful job).

Do you really believe that rape is a natural instinct for men? Really? Rape, you know, is not just a sexual act, it is a violent one. If a man rapes a woman he’s not just acting on a sexual urge, he’s committing violence against her. Yes, a man may have the natural desire to have sex with an attractive woman, but that is a far cry from attacking her, overpowering her, and forcing himself on her. Do you really think that is natural? Do you really think all men privately desire to rape?

And when you said that society has evolved to keep males in a state of continuous unfulfilled urges, all I have to say is OF COURSE IT HAS! For both men and women! That’s what makes us human: controlling our urges. If we didn’t, we’d be just like animals. That’s where your zebra and lion analogy goes awry. We don’t blame the lion, not just because it’s his nature, but because he doesn’t have the ability to rise above his nature. People do.
That’s why humans are held accountable for their actions, because they have the free will to choose to do the right thing even when they have the desire to do the wrong.

These actions you are describing are considered wrong not because society is unfair to men’s nature, but because society recognizes that men know better. Because they are not animals, so they are not ruled by instinct. These men DO have the ability to control their urges. Because they are human.

So what I’m saying is, rape IS deviant behavior. The sexual urge is not, necessarily. But the violent component definitely is.

Also, society is not being unfair to men by expecting them to curb their urges. Controlling our desires is what makes us more than animals.

Women, Scott, have natural sexual urges as well. However I don't jump my husband or the closet male in the room when I get those urges. I was sad to hear about those poor rapists who were victims of society's shrewed and unnatural laws that criminalize their basic instincts though. Every now and again I forget that women are not human beings and are recepticals for sperm, but good thing I have ignorant and pointless blogs like this one to remind me. I'm sure that if the rapists just explained to their victims that they were !$%*! and needed to get off, they would be willing to spread their legs and assist in the process. Do you even understand that rape isn't about sex? It isn't about acheiving orgasm of relieving an !$%*!$%*! it's about control. Every man gets aroused but most of them do not become rapists. Ask any 15 year old boy it's called self control. And by the way it's a square peg in a round hole and lionesses do most of the hunting. Didn't you use to be in Mensa?

An at bat for Scott Adams taken from:

http://www.reddit.com/r/feminisms/comments/lfg84/petition_tell_dilberts_scott_adams_that_rape_is/c2sddso

Respectfully, I disagree. Take a quote from Adam's Blog:
"The current view of such things is that the men are to blame for their own bad behavior. That seems right."

He immediately understands and acknowledges that rape is a horrendous crime, the ultimate fault for which lies with the perpetrator. What, then, are we to do merely with that information? I believe the feminist movement can take a page from it's own book in understanding the context of Adam's views. To make sense of why we observe so few women in math and the hard sciences, we seldom try to explain these variations through differences in intelligence. To understand, diagnose, and fix the problem, we have to be aware of what societal structures might push boys towards math and women away from it (for example). I'm reminded of the AMA on pedophilia today as an illustrative example of how we can actually do the most good by acknowledging certain immoral urges people might have (be they against unwilling children or adults). IMHO, both Adam's and the poster of the AMA fully understand and, in fact, argue that rape of any variety is wrong. What, then, is so wrong with trying to understand it's underlying causes and eradicate them so that fewer people have those urges in the first place?
To your first point, I agree that the heart of the issue cannot and should not be whether rape is natural or not. It seems to exist elsewhere outside of humankind.

Kurt Kaletka on the online petition seems to miss this point by commenting that
"You know, beating people up is a natural instinct, too. And when someone near me gets on my nerves, I might want to beat that person up. And since I'm larger than most people, I could probably do it. But I hold back, despite what nature says. This is not just because I'm a nice person, though that's the main part (or so I like to think.) It's because this is called assault, and assault is not legal."

But this seems to me like exactly what Adam's is saying. To acknowledge that you have an urge towards violence, or that men in general have a tendency for rape (which statistically they do), or that pedophiles have a lust for children does not, by any token, exonerate any of these three groups for acting on that urge. What societal institutions might exacerbate the tendency to rape? What can we do to prevent it? These seem like far more helpful questions (questions that it seemed to me that Adam's was attempting, perhaps poorly, to answer). I think we need to extend to him some good old fashioned reddiquette:
DON'T: Downvote opinions just because you disagree with them. The down arrow is for comments that add nothing to the discussion.

I think Adams wants to contribute to the discussion. So do I. What can we do now?

Let me give you a little hint as to what Scott meant with his "LRC" comment.

If I say that people fantasize about eating, drinking, collecting coins, becoming famous, and eating cheese, I'm not saying that every person on earth fantasizes about all of those things. I'm saying that each of these fantasies exist in at least some portion of the people on earth. There are, no doubt, some men who fantasize about rape, just as there are some women who fantasize about doing really bad things to men who have offended them. That does not mean that all men fantasize about rape, nor all women fantasize about cutting off men's private parts. But some do.

Almost no one who is lucid enough to participate in this post would deny the obvious fact that some people do fantasize about bad things; however, it is very possible that some, and perhaps many, did miss seeing the point that it is some, not all, about which Scott wrote. Obviously, those who erupted in anger over Scott's "Pegs and Holes" post were unable to figure this out. Hence Scott's LRC comment.

I'm no defender of Scott's, usually. I think his opinions vary, for the most part, from ludicrous to inane. But two things: he has the right to his opinion, and the first amendment right to state it. I don't know how we've come to the point where, if any identifiable group takes offense to something, that means it should either be censored or apologized for. If you're offended by what Scott writes, so what? Your objection is not reason not to state your opinion.

There's a reason why the founders put freedom of speech as the first protection they guaranteed the government would not abridge. The free exchange of ideas is what allows us to weigh and consider other points of view. It does not give us the right to censor those who disagree with us.

As John Stuart Mill wrote in "Liberty" (1859), "The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error."

Scott, continue to challenge us with your opinions, wacky as some of them may be. And tell the LRC folks to go pound sand.

@belsteve I read you comment that "Over the last few months, he has posted a number of blogs describing how easily witch-hunts and smear campaigns take place over the internet through mis-quoting and quoting out of context. This is merely the latest of his experiments, which quite clearly prove his hypothesis as correct.
I wouldn't say the people posting counter-blogs are necessarily stupid, despite the quality of their posts; merely that they find the temptation of a fix of self-righteous indignation too much to resist."
Wow,hit the nail on the head.
The reaction Scott reminds me of the near lynch mob like activity of the citizens of Vancouver in outing, shaming, and threatening thhe young men even who just sat on the sidelines and cheered. It's no coincidence that the Van City riots reaction also had numerous anti-male comments, with one poster going as far as saying that men cause all the problems in our society.
Yet in Egypt or Yemen, the young men who had the balls to stand up are applauded as heroes despite breaking stuff and fighting with the police.Personally, Im afraid of the coming matriarchy as women are much more accepting of autocrats-look at the first Prez elected by women in this county-Warren Harding-one of the worst presidents in US history. Also look at how women refuse to marry below their status, class, and employment- while men tend to cross class boundaries in search of mates...

Men at least are honest about WANTING something from the opposite gender, rather then coating themselves in self righteousness. Which is why a male teacher who father a child with a student would likely lose his head if society had it's way while the female teacher who fathered 2 children with a black school kid has her behavior explained away by psychology.

Okay, so let's forget what Scott did or didn't say, being as you seem intent on taking up a new discussion entirely, it sounds like you are saying that "power, manipulation, hatred, a desire to harm and demean another" are not natural human traits, but rather that they result from a mentally ill twisted distorted psyche. Seriously, have you ever read any history, picked up a paper, looked at prison stats, or otherwise observed the World, past and present? Okay, I won't argue that such behavior is as you said it is. Does that make it not natural? Maybe you're equating "natural" with good, or enlightened. It's not. Natural just means "as it occurs in nature". I've argued for ages that mankind is not as elevated as people seem to want to think. Overall, we're still pretty primitive. This points out even more that terms need to be defined before engaging in arguments. For the record, I do not believe "natural" means, good, right, necessary, or even desirable. It just means as things tend in nature. The evidence shows that if nothing else, men are naturally at war. Just look at how adversarial this discussion has gotten. So much of what you say I do agree with. Rape is all about control, dominance, power, and abuse. Not a lick of actual human sexuality in it. Yeah, in deference to that guy earlier, there are SOME...SOME women who fantasize about rape, but it's fantasy...and is fully under their control, has no reality to it, and is more just a way to release small inhibitions in their own psyches...and involves a fantasy partner who is non-threatening, caring, and way more appealing than any stranger. Really, the term "rape" shouldn't even be attached to those fantasies. Rape is beating, torturing, killing, and mental abuse. Nothing remotely appealing about that.
That's the thing, though. Cruelty and overall meanness and aggression DO seem to be far more prevalent than we'd like to admit. Does that mean that there's a huge population of mentally ill, twisted, distorted psyches? Maybe. It's there though, and no amount of denial will make that not so.
