In the UK Halloween isn't such a big deal, although it's getting there. I trace the rise of trick-or-treating to the scene in ET. But most adults still regard it as a tasteless, nasty, unpleasant American import. But obviously we still dress up, because, hey, hypocrisy is funny, right?

What's also funny is that one of the most popular television personalities of the 1970s, a man with a very strong visual image and who was already quite a popular subject for dress-up and impressionists, has, just in the last few weeks, been revealed to have been a serial predatory paedophile who may, in the course of his work for the BBC, have abused hundreds of vulnerable girls. This appalling, horrific revelation that someone who was a part of the childhood of every thirty- and forty-something adult in the country was in fact a monster has of course meant that every single dress-up costume has sold out well in advance, and I'd estimate about 50% of pumpkins nationwide were carved into a grinning face and equipped with a blonde wig, sunglasses, a bling necklace and a cigar. Certainly every single house in my street had one.

Jimmy Savile - the ONLY costume anyone wore on Halloween 2012 in the UK.

I was always a fan of the Bill McNeal character's Halloween costume that got a mention on NewsRadio: "guy without socks." Of course, I'm also just not that into Halloween (it's not my thing), so I always just snark that my costume is something like "hubris," "indifference," or "guy from a universe without costumes," etc. Or there's the old stand-by of the "Hello, My Name Is..." name tag.

For a non-sarcastic costume, many Doctors from Doctor Who are usually simple enough. I'm tall and fairly thin - the 10th doctor would be pretty easy. It's just a blue pinstripe suit, brown overcoat, and red sneakers. I knew one guy who was nearly bald, so he did the 9th doctor a few years ago - no hair, all black, dark overcoat. Or the fourth - wild curly hair, giant scarf.

[ So what if they are? The lines are there regardless. They are where they are regardless. And if we take your suggestion and make adult halloween costumes non-standard all that will change is you and folks like you will be happier with our standards at the expense of Scott and other folks who like to dress up on halloween. ]

You are confusing cause and effect. There is no conscious effort or coercion involved here. Short of a law being passed to ban an activity (which I would be 100% against), the lines only get redrawn when society as a whole decides to redraw them, meaning the people who like to dress up for Halloween change their minds about it. Even if that happened, there would be nothing except societal pressure stopping the minority who still wanted to do it.

It's a virtual certainty that I will fail at convincing others about this, and this particular line will remain where it is. It doesn't cost me much to try, though, and I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't.

I didn't get a great look at all of them as they walked past, but each had their "sin" on their chest. One guy was in swim trunks with Greed written on his chest along with dollar signs and he had fistfulls of fake bills - he was "naked greed". Sloth was !$%*!$%*! and unkempt and at the end of the line. Gluttany had a bucket of chicken with him. You get the idea.

delius1967:
I was about to say, "You make a good point but I would say that only some rules are drawn completely arbitrarily. "

Then I was going to provide the example of wanton cruelty as being unacceptable, but I remembered that wars which kill and cripple millions of people, mostly civilians, for the purpose of maintaining political influence are ok, as are prisons which systematically torture _suspected_ terrorists. Come to think of it, the only difference between a terrorist and a soldier is whose side they're on.

Then I was going to say cruelty to animals is frowned upon, but I remembered how the bog-corporate meat industry crams animals into intolerable conditions which cause massive suffering just to save a few cents a pound on food production, and most people are fine with that.

I can't think of any example which proves my point. I have actually convinced myself that you're right.

[ We have plenty and my personal favorite is that one ought not pretend their slight personal discomfort with something innocuous is worth more than it is. ]

I think what I meant was fairly clear, but for the nitpickers, I'll rephrase: wouldn't you rather live in a society that actually had some HIGHER standards of behavior? That didn't encourage people to act like idiots, since, God knows, they do it often enough on their own?

Let me ask you this. Suppose it suddenly became trendy for people to wear swimsuits in public. Not to the beach, mind you, but just when generally walking around. Is that innocuous? Well, sure. It isn't hurting anyone. We all wear swimsuits at some point. You probably wouldn't notice it after a while. What if it was, say, adult diapers? Still innocuous? Still isn't hurting anyone, right? How about cardboard boxes, cleverly cut and shored up with masking tape to keep your jujubes out of sight? Still OK? How about we forget the boxes, and just wear the tape? No problem with that?

Heck, let's forget the clothes entirely. What's wrong with the human body? In general, I mean. There's plenty wrong with mine. But why do we have these ridiculously uptight standards of decency, anyway?

I'm well aware of the slippery slope that I'm standing on. But those of you voting down on my posts, you're standing on it, too, just in a different place than I am. Society draws its lines between what is decent and what is not, between what is acceptable and what is not, and those lines are drawn *completely*arbitrarily*. While you roll your eyes at me whining about adult Halloween costumes, rest assured there are people out there rolling their eyes at the mores that you find sacred. I might be one of them, for something else.

I'm well aware that I'm on the other side of the line on this one. I'd just like that to be different.

so far, i've only seen, like, three costumes mentioned so far: hurricane sandy, homeless big bird, and steve jobs. so i will add to the costume count.

easy costumes (i have done these): buy a space flight suit online from johnson space flight center's gift store and go as an astronaut--that's a costume that's as comfortable as pajamas (girls, remember to french braid your hair or otherwise style it as if it had to fit under a helmet). or go to alivan's online and buy wizard robes and dress as a character from harry potter; although delius1967 probably thinks this costume would be extra-creepy, it is uber comfortable since you are just wearing the robes over your own clothes and can easily de-costume yourself if a meeting crops up at work. or dress up like harpo marx and honk at people all day instead if talking to them.

visual pun costumes for couples: dress the man as clark kent and the woman as meriwether lewis ... hey presto, lewis and clark. or dress the man as william clark and the woman as lois lane ... hey presto, lois and clark. i did the first one when i had a significant other. we also dressed the man as a nun and the woman as a priest and wore big crosses so that we could say we were cross-dressers.

the best visual pun i've ever seen: a girl came to a dance wearing a white full slip (the kind that looks like a little dress) on which she had written id, ego, super ego, edipus complex, dream analysis, etc. didja get it? if not, her costume was ... wait for it ... a freudian slip.

"Thats kinda been in flux ever since the 60s"

This has been in flux since societal standards existed.

The entire notion that anyone is _not_ living in a society with standards is ludicrous. And you normally only hear it from someone who has a stick up his rear about something (or some sort of a "complex") and wants rules that others just don't see a need for.

I think people shouldn't mix mayonnaise and mustard - you don't agree? What do you want, anarchy? Wouldn't you rather there be some superfluous rules that happen to jive with _my_ personal issues about mixing foods?

"wouldn't you rather live in a society that actually had some standards of behavior?"

Sounds like another question that could make up a blog post all by itself; what are the standards on which society should be based. Thats kinda been in flux ever since the 60s. I don't see that adult halloween parties are anything to get upset over. There are, however, a few standards Id like to see society adopt, quite possibly standards you wouldn't like, delius1967. I won't mention them here because they could turn this blog post into a big fight about standards and Scott did warn us about that sort of thing. The point is standards would be nice but we have to agree on WHAT standards.

[ If adults want to dress up and go to adult halloween parties wheres the bad? - whtllnew ]

I didn't say it was harmful. I said it was creepy.

Tijuana Bibles -- especially ones based on children's cartoons -- weren't "harmful" per se, but their very existence cheapened the art form. AND they were creepy. Adults co-opting childhood rituals, or affecting child-like behavior, and putting a mature spin on them isn't harmful in a direct way, assuming they don't involve actual children of course. But Jesus H. Christ on rollerskates, wouldn't you rather live in a society that actually had some standards of behavior?

risingstarlp: disney also did John Carter, which was a pretty big flop. The first Pirates movie was great but the followups had problems recapturing the magic. And I can't remember the last time they did a decent feature length cartoon. Mulan was the last one I guess.

So it's fair to say they've had their fair share of hits and misses.

Lucas's recent properties, the prequels and Indy 4, have been trending down. So this isn't taking over a successful studio (marvel), with the right person directing your big hit (Wheldon), at the right time when your fan base has peaked. The star wars core fanbase is a mixture of angry, desperate, and disillusioned. So this is a franchise that you either have to rebuild or you just need to accept that it isn't going to be popular with one of its target crowds.
