What do you think of this actor, Adam DeVine, to play Dilbert in a live-action movie?

He's quickly becoming one of my favorite comedy talents. He's the right age and look too.

I'm hoping to write a  Dilbert movie script this summer and it helps to have an actor in mind even if the actor isn't aware of it.

[Update: Please stop saying Drew Carey in the comments. He would have been ideal about 20 years ago. The story I have in mind is more of an origin story in which we see a younger Dilbert freshly into the cubicle world. He would age in sequels.]

He could even play Dilbert's mom too: evidence here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8jEeZLOdSs

He's perfect. He has a certain blandness in his face that you can project whatever you want to onto it. His voice is squeaky, like a nerd. And he's likeable and funny. Good choice!

On the other hand, Adam Driver might make a pretty good Alice.

Totally thought you meant Adam Driver.

That would get dark quickly. Although if you re-imagined Dilbert as a thriller, with Dilbert as a brilliant but unhinged engineer, framed for murder when the badly mutilated corpse of the pointy-haired boss is found...well, it might work.

My biggest worry about using him is that you might be unduly influenced by his performance in Workaholics. Realistically, any actor who played a major role in an office environment (The Office, Workaholics, Parks and Recreation, etc) might be wrong for this reason.

Anybody that thinks Adam Devine could play an engineer has met few engineers.

Michael Cera would be good.

Richard Ayoade is a pretty awesome suggestion, but likely better suited for a sequel, as his personality is more in line with Dilbert's cynical side that I imagine only developed after this origin story (since you suggested Adam DeVine- who generally plays more upbeat and happy than cynical).

Another suggestion would be Zach Woods from The Office and Mike Judge's Silicon Valley. I think he has the right feel for a new Dilbert being exposed to the abuse of work (If you watch the first season of Silicon Valley, you can see an example of this already).

How about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Bennett

No need for the PHB debate. The perfect person to play him is the same person who voiced him in the cartoon series: Larry Miller.

I wonder if you could get Kaley Cuoco to play Liz?

OK, but Devine is still too handsome. We need someone we can envision all the women in the office turning down for a date.

Adam DeVine .......... WAY TOO ANIMATED !!!!!!

You need an very introverted comedian like Steven Wright or a Stan Laurell type.

I can see the looks but would him being in a cubicle world be too close to Workaholics? And so confuse the two for viewers?

[I need a 20-something in case of sequels]

Nah. Just give us the best Dilbert you can right now. If you compromise because you're thinking of sequels..well, there won't be any sequels*

* or they will suck and deep down you'll know it. Just my two penn'orth.

Way too handsome for a geek. He would have to take some serious ugly lessons before he would even dare apply for work in sector 7G.

I couldn't tell from the photo, and the videos linked didn't help either. But we know Dilbert as a walking dead, he would be someone very different before he lost his soul in a pit of pointless, festering tedium.

Strangely enough, I watch Workaholics but I didn't recognize the name "Adam DeVine." Coincidentally my immediate thought about who could play Dilbert was the actor who plays Anders on Workaholics. (I just googled - his name is "Anders Holmvik.") He plays the straight-man role hilariously, and I see Dilbert as a generally sane person made funny by the characters that surround him.
