Several years ago I wrote a non-Dilbert book called God's Debris. I called it a "thought experiment" because I used hypnosis techniques in the writing to give readers a euphoric mental sensation, as if they were learning some deeper truth about reality. Evidently it worked. Many people tell me they have reread God's Debris four or five times just for the buzz.

For others, God's Debris is like eating an onion. People who are on the outer fringes of either dogmatism or skepticism find it hard to relax and simple feel ideas that don't seem right to them. And if you have a doctorate in philosophy, or the like, you might not get the full impact of the book, in the same way that a guy taking an LSD trip doesn't need a bong hit. But if you don't fall into one of those categories, God's Debris can be an interesting experience.

Until now, there was always one thing holding back the full impact of God's Debris: The physical process of reading makes it difficult to fully relax at the same time. That's why I'm excited that God's Debris is finally available as an audio book, both on iTunes and Audible.com. Now you can slip in your ear buds, sit back, close your eyes, and take a 2-hour and 44 minute mental flight.

After an extensive search of voice talent, I chose DC Goode to narrate. In case you wondered, hypnosis requires no special type of voice. I chose DC because he made the material come alive. It's a rare talent.

If you recommend the audiobook to anyone, let me know how they experienced it. You can e-mail me at dilbertcartoonist@gmail.com.

(Warning: I don't recommend listening to it while driving.)

I read this book several months ago and I was very excited reading it. I also made a mental note to read it again after a few months/years to enjoy it better. It was the first time somebody attempted to explain the 'why' part of the existence. We may never find out if it is true but its nice to have a theory.

Scott. You really must do a post on the major things you learned in hypnotism school. I'd love to learn stuff vicariously through you.

I'm quite curious to see how you used your learnings in God's Debris.

yeah.. God's Debris was a let down for me, sorry. I put it down it thinking you had finally developed the christ complex celebrities occasionally get. I didn't notice any hypnotic effects, but then I haven't been hypnotized that I know about anyway. I even went to a few different hypnotists in the past, wanting to have the experience of letting go like that.

Really pleased the book came out as an audiobook. I have wanted to read it for a long while now but couldn't get used to reading an e-book and never got round to buying it! I listened to it while at work and found the theories interesting and enjoyable. I will be listening again a few times to digest all the points discussed.

I think I will add Scott Adams to my list of people I would love to have at my fictional dinner party... Scott would you be happy to attend? your sitting between English Comedian Russel Brand and Elvis?

My favorite excerpt: "...4-3-2-1 *snap!* -"You will buy my books. Buy several copies of all my books. When you awake at the sound of the snap, you will not remember this passage but you will buy my books..." *snap!*

@b166er No offense, but the fact that you were a Hare Krishna explains exactly what kind of people 'buy in' to this kind of books. Meaning a book that promises you to learn universal truths about yourself, the world and everything. Namely people that are desparately seeking for some kind of guidance, failing to accept that the world is just one big mess made up of people who are not intrinsically good.

I found the beginning of the book very good, it really caught me where the delivery boy met the old man (I believe it was an old man). But after a few chapters, as the underlying theories were unfolded, I found it lost power. That may be because I think the main theory is just too absurd.

Surprisingly few comments ...

I've bought the audio book though and have to say I really love it (had read the e-book before)! The voices are very good and suit the story well.

As for the story itself, some of the ideas are still pure genius. While others of course don't hold up ;)

first I bought the book, then I downloaded as an e-book (propriety Microsoft software), then it was available free as a PDF (yay!), now it is available as an audio book in two proprietary formats. Since I have it on hand to read, and I don't mind the sound of my own voice and I have a free audio recording software studio on my laptop, I'll make my own audiobook ( not to distribute, for my own personal use) so don't panic and call off the lawyers, I just prefer self-hypnosis, that's all and all it costs me is my own time.

I don't think I am overly skeptical and definitely not religious or anything to find God's Debris objectionable, but it made no impact on me. It was interesting in the same way Plato's writings and Nietzsche's Thus spoke Zarahustra are interesting, but tedious to read.
Kind of an ego masturbation that we all do when day dreaming about being smarter and wittier than everybody else.

Good job, you made me curious about the book. Pity there's DRM involved.

I read both God's Debris and Religion Wars (and the Dilbert Principle)....all good stuff and all for free (thanks to the public library).

I read God's Debris a couple years ago when you first gave it out as a free ebook. It was killer! I was a Hare Krishna at the time and it totally set me free (now I'm a Safety Manager). I had already read "The Dilbert Principle" so I knew to read it on the clock. Thanks Scott!

Why don't you hypnotise us into wanting to buy the thing, with your blog posts?

If you play the audio book of God's Debris backwards there is a hidden subliminal message that says "Thank you for paying for 2 copies of God's Debris. When the Kindle edition comes out you will buy that too. Keeping buying Dilbert merchandise."

I've been through God's Debris twice - I didn't find it until you gave it away, but it was interesting enough that I tracked down the sequel as soon as it emerged and enjoyed it. I'm not sure that I ever found myself hypmotized, and a lot of the "deep truths" seemed either flawed or obvious to me (not including the "people like talking about themselves" revelation - although that may be obvious to many people, it really redefined the way that I conduct myself in social gatherings - I'm far less boring now). The premise described by the title I found novel and interesting - Not quite "redefine my relationship with the universe" interesting, but really neat.

Now that I'm done rambling, this seems perfectly suited for conversion to audio. I usually can't handle audio books (the link between my ears and my brain isn't terribly talented), but since this is largely a conversation/monologue I can't believe that it's taken this long to change format. Best of luck!

what about Kindle? Would love to carry it with me...take a quick hit on occasion, keep the buzz rolling.

Isn't hypnotizing your audience into a a euphoric state without informing them that this is what might happen somewhat immoral? Kinda like slipping some vodka in someone's OJ? Sure they might like it, but you are taking away their choice by not offering them the option to use or not use it. A little like mental rape, really.

I'll have to reread that story, and be mindfully aware of any "Buy Scott Adams Books" statements that are spelled out if you take the first letters of every fourth word.

Hey Scott,
I've read God's Debris several months ago, I was at work when I started reading and actually couldn't stop reading until the end. So either your hypnosis worked on me or I was in the mood to do anything but work.
I've downloaded the book from an e-book source, in the end i loved the book so much that I decided that I should pay for that but at that moment I realized that the e-book was free and I spent my money on several Dilbert books . So some of the money you earned from Dilbert is actually coming from of "God's Debris" :)

Congratulations with the audio book. I've never felt comfortable with e-books anyway but the book is really great.
