I've written before about the fact that a person's name can influence his choices. Studies show that people named Dennis become dentists at a higher rate than you would expect. People also prefer to live in places that sound like their own names. Names matter.

I was thinking about the naming of things while watching the debate over the iPad. And by the way, for the record, I would like to say I was wrong about the iPad being a non-genius device that consumers would compare unfavorably to a laptop. According to the media, who are desperate for a savior to their dying industry, the iPad is primarily a competitor to the Kindle. On that comparison, I predict iPad wins. Apple will nail the user interface, and make it relevant for the whole family. Kindle will mostly belong to Mom or Dad. On a cost per person basis, the iPad will actually be less expensive because more family members will share it. And Apple will make it easy for old media to make the leap to a digital-only distribution model because Jobs will make people believe it can work. Apple is the only company that manufactures belief.

Back to the names of things: Much has been made of the fact that iPad sounds like feminine protection. I get that. But how does that name influence consumer behavior? Feminine protection is generally considered essential. Perhaps that subconscious connection actually works in Apple's favor.

Consider the name Apple. An apple is the Christian symbol of an irresistible urge, whereas Kindle sounds like the unimportant twigs you use to start a fire. Kindle also sounds old-timey, as in "Grandma's got her Kindle and her rocking chair."

Compared to the Kindle, Apple wins on name, coolness, interface, cost-per-person, extra applications, web surfing, and probably its media distribution model. Kindle wins on screen readability, which is mostly relevant to oldsters. Battery life will be good enough on both.

Does that mean I should go by William instead of Bill?

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see anyone else mention you're bit about battery life being equitable. I charge my kindle about once every 1 - 1.5 months. (assuming I don't use the wireless ... which frankly I only every use for about 2 minutes at a time when I need a new book). How does 10 hours compare to THAT?

But wait, this article was about names or some such wasn't it? I guess I'm alone in this, but Kindle always makes me think of "inciting passion" ... in this case for reading I suppose. The first thing you think of is putting it to the torch?!? I have to admit yours would make a better movie.

Love your blog man, thanks!

If you're comparing the names "Ipad" and "Apple" with "Kindle" shouldn't you also be comparing them with "Amazon"?

Now, Kindle vs Ipad and Apple I could see as a win for apply,

But when you factor in the name Amazon I'm pretty sure things go the other way ;)

Nice. The new look is very nice. Living in the wonderful new house has made you want to class up everything?

One request, not made here for the first time ... please allow the name link (in your blog's comments section) to link to that commenter's blog. It would be such a friendly and helpful thing for THE SCOTT ADAMS BLOG to do for those who make the effort to comment

!!

Hey Scott, I don't like the new screen interface! The dark red color is a bit distracting!

Several none-too-clever false arguments in there, Scott. Like comparing the name Kindle to Apple. Apple is the brand name of the iPad. Sort of like Amazon is the brand name of the Kindle. Amazon sounds cooler than Apple, I think. Or at least sexier. Kindle does sound old-fashioned, but that's still preferable to being compared to a maxi pad.

There's also this little nugget: "Apple is the only company that manufactures belief."

I'd keep at those hypnotism classes; you've got a ways to go yet.

Had to laugh at this. My given name has a lot of Vs in it and I live on an island that begins with a V. Didn't move there until I was 48 but loved the place for many years before I inhabited it. (I write under a much more manageable pseudonym.)

The iPad isn't easily readable in sunlight; the Kindle is. This along with the price will tip the balance in favor of the Kindle. (The Kindle isn't remotely old enough tech to be seen as being only for parents or grandparents, and either families share tech or they don't, there's nothing about the iPad that makes it more likely to be shared.)

OMG, someone moved my cheese! I must kill them.

But apart from the disdain and fear that I feel for all things changey, I really like the new layout of your site.

Nice new layout, definitely an improvement. The tacky ads for getting rid of my stomach fat ruin it, though.

Why can't somebody simply make a personal computer in a shape and style of a pad. It should be completely compatlble with your desktop. All the programs which work on the desktop should work on the pad. Then I would be interested.

Tell Jobs I said hi. lol nice plug ;)

Anyway the iPad has a computer (backlit) screen.
The kindle reads like actual print, not hard on the eyes.

That comparison alone allows the kindle to trump the iPad when it comes to ebook reading.

Thing is lame in my opinion just get a netbook, like apple? get a MSI wind and put mac/osx on it save yourself hundreds plus you can do more than one thing at a time and don't have a monthly bill lol.
