I like the mystery of the invintion, just what does it do, and does it even matter? Lawyers can go after anything anyway.

To me, Dilbert's invention appears to be some kind of telescope. I suppose it could be anything, but the telescope explains the thing sticking out of the top, the slit on the opposite side, and the potential for lawsuits.
