I did some subbing in a large school system and frequently did custodial jobs. In that environment, the adherence to recycling was inconsistent from one school to another. It really depended upon the individual working as to whether trash and recyclables went into separate bins or not.

In Aarhus Denmark we had to sort garbage into 4 too, then the garbage truck collecting it mashed and mixed it into one too. I think it was meant as a way to get ppl used to sorting but cut backs illiminated that before it worked.

Where I live the municipal introduced home recycling, where we separated glass, metal, food, plastic, and paper from other trash. The recycling stations where underfunded and quickly overwhelmed by the quantity comming in, so they just gave up and dumped all the trash in the land fill. This went on for years before newspapers began writing about it and then for many more years before anything was done...
