Don't forget about taxes! Assuming a 40% rate and 3% inflation -
5% return
x 60% remaining
= 3%
less 3% inflation =
0% real growth. - unless Asok tosses the $ into a Roth.
Yes, but assuming inflation all these 190 years will be around 3% per year, you're only left with 2% real growth, which turns your $100 initial investment into $4305 in 190 years. Oh, and hope the entire civilization won't be reduced back to the Middle Ages after we run out of oil (keeping your fingers crossed is advisable).
I laugh at "some" people who buy into Rhonda Byrne's self-actualization philosophy a.k.a. The Secret. These are the people who either give up early because they're looking for a quick fix in their screwed up lives and The Secret doesn't provide what they want fast enough, or the people who believe the philosophy actually works for them, then their fortunes desert them like a Vegas call girl realizing theses johns just blew their wad and then she moves on to another mark, leaving the guys sitting there wondering, "What just happened?" and the beautiful losers become bitter, mistrustful and cynical until they're bushwhacked by another media prophet promising riches and fulfillment.
The Secret cannot work for everyone just because of common sense, human nature and the math numbers involved. I look at The Secret as a very powerful tool that few people really understand, have the discipline to implement and know how to use. Like, say Unix or Linux.
