My company has a 212 program for excelled teamwork and I swear this is how it was conceived. This is to close and that is about how you feel when you get it.

I recall a story in the Dilbert Principle about this, only the group making the "quality process" awards decided to give the award to themselves.

This kicks off the following reasoning in me.

- People need an illusion of career growth thereby contributing to the company growth.
- The playing along is marketing to customers in itself. "Teamwork building stuff for you" is what customers and investors want to see.
- These awards sometimes give new scapegoats the illusion of working in a good place to work.
- These awards give middle management some stars for their own careers.
- These awards supplement incompetent salaries by playing on employee sentiments. The sort of thing between being recognized and not being paid.
