tech support is one of those 'im not sure if we need these guys, but we will keep them around anyway' type of professions. i feel like google and youtube provide better tech support then living human beings do.

You know, what makes me so glad to be working in Japan is that we have none of this nonsense!
You actually get real people on the other end of the line, who care about you, who are apologetic, who are professional, and who get the job done!

Of course, you have to be prepared to be hitting the redial button for four hours straight before you make contact...

Ahh yes, happens to me all the time! It's like you shouldn't even bother trying basic troubleshooting because you're just going to have to repeat the dance again once you break down and call tech support.

However, what was even worse was the time that my university library card wouldn't let me checkout something online. I changed a bunch of settings and updating my profile but it still wouldn't work. I had to drag my butt to the actualy physical library (barbaric!). The help desk clerk said "Just change this setting from A to B" and I said "No, I already tried that. It didn't help." and she was like "Nooooo, I think it'll work. Just try changing that setting." and I was like "No, I TRIED that. It didn't WORK!" so finally she went into my account herself and changed that setting and THEN THE DAMN THING WORKED. I thought "Oh crap, now every annoying tech support list in the world just gained a little ounce of credibility! WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!?"

That reminds of the day I called my phone company because my Internet access was broken.

Me: "My Internet access is broken."
Support line: "Ah, yes. Before I can help you, you have to download the most recent firmware for your modem."
Me: "My Internet access is broken."
Support line: "I know. But I can't help you until you download the most recent firmware."

The company had Internet issues all over the country that day, but I didn't find that out until I read it in the newspaper the next day.
