Actually, patent applications have to have the NAME OF THE INVENTOR(s) on the patent. IBM never invented anything; IBM employees did, and IBM got an infinite exclusive license to it.
I had quite a few managers and colleagues like this when I worked at IBM who would stop at nothing to weasel their ways onto patents they knew nothing about. Any competitor who wants to invalidate an IBM patent needs merely to subpoena all the "inventors" and have each testify under oath what s/he did or didn't do to contribute to the claims and body of the invention.
