Boss: If all our completed projects this year are under their budget, a bonus is paid out
Me: Who gets this bonus?
Boss: Management.
Me: And what is my incentive?
Boss: The pleasure in knowing you have done your job correctly.

Well, that's me suitably motivated.

When I was a newbie at the IT game, my manager bullied me and a couple of others into working over a weekend once. It was at the end of winter, and this was the first gorgeous sunny weekend in months. On the following Monday he came in boasting about what a wonderful weekend he had, and then gave us a 45 minute speech on how a negative attitude is unhealthy and unproductive.
