I think a more interesting problem would be to program the website to generate fake browser histories, then invent a calculus that would allow the programmer to determine how to manipulate them to control the marketing department. Best of all, there would be no moral conflicts!

It's sad but true. Many companies are just pushing around information about your behavior at this point, as products and even many services have given way to the service of collecting how you use ye 'ole Web. You can reduce those analytics to some degree with script blockers, NoScript et al, but unless you leave your machine unplugged, someone's coming for you.

One can only hope that Net Neutrality prevails, or we'll be in some even deeper kimchi, with the providers choking off bandwidth to all but the wealthiest and most influential consumers.
