Actually, it's not so much a new twist as the original meaning. The term "deadline" comes from prisoner camps in the US Civil War where soldiers were shot if the passed the line marker the perimeter. So, being dead because you crossed the deadline is very much in line with the etymology of the term. Fortunately, not staying within a deadline is not generally fatal these days.
