That's the point. Engineers don't have social skills to begin with. But they gradually acquire the skills through all these required meetings at the work place (it goes to tell you how "useful" these meetings are, i.e. they are social events, rather than decision-making events)... Without those meetings, Darryl returns to his formal self -- an engineer with no social skill.

Thank God for social events like "Dilbert" comment boards! A lot of these folks don't get to meetings.
