This reminds me of a CNET shootout between the iPhone and... I think the Nokia N900, in which categories like "looks" were weighted as highly as "performance". During the test, the iPhone was unable to place a call to a test phone one foot away! However, the devices ended up tied and the reviewer decided the tie-breaker would be... looks, thus awarding the win to the smartphone that was unable to actually place a phone call during testing! CNET just couldn't get their minds around the idea of an iPhone not coming out on top.
It's not just phones though... car magazines and BMW are the same way. During one comparison of US and German cars, the reviewer had to deduct a sliver from the Cadillac CTS-V coupe for its TURN SIGNAL SOUND NOT BEING TOUGH ENOUGH in order to award the BMW the win... even though they were road-testing in Germany and the German driver said the American car handled better at higher speeds.
