The root problem is the lack of nuance in political discussion, at least in America. SOPA and all the others will add operating costs to internet based companies so they want to fight it. The find a possible slippery slope flaw in the way the laws are written so they polarize the argument by framing it as freedom of speech vs coporate profits.
The nuance in this is that the fundamental goal of SOPA was to prevent people from stealing. The intent was to give the U.S Government the ability to hold Websites accountable for the conduct of the users they host. This is no more unreasonable the obligating me to not allow my house guests to preform criminal acts under my roof. The point of the debate should be "is SOPA overreaching?". As written does it allow the government to obtain a warrant and then search my house, or does it et the government burn my house to the ground if they vaguely suspect something is wrong? But that doesn't mean the law should not be passed, only that it be rewritten properly.
Still missing the part where they buy off some politicians to go their way.
@saiken
Problem with capitalism is greed is good, problem with socialism is everybody confuses it with Marxism and Communism. In reality the best result lays somewhere near to but not quite at the center between them.
