There is a way to send small images and signatures over the telegraph. It was created in 1857 and called the pantelegraph.

This author, Terry Pratchett, did a sort of steampunk version of what you said in one of his books: an internet analogue over a net of clacks. And it was awesome.

jibickley- you mean a cryptographic signature. the electronic trail of a simple fax or email is pathetic- easily forgeable as several people have pointed out.

Hey, you guys that are fussing over the fact that a similar strip has appeared in the past, chill!. I think an occasional 'variation on a theme' is permissible when a guy does a daily strip for 25 years.
