The amount of unpaid overtime an employee puts in is directly correlated to the lowness of esteem in which she is held by her boss. I worked a job on salary, and was expected to put in unpaid OT; but when the state stepped in and said, this is an hourly job, you can't pay salary, all of a sudden they didn't want me to work any overtime or forego lunch or breaks.

Employers like salaries because they can force people to work extra hours without pay, which is why the State of California has strict guidelines as to what is actually salaried work and what isn't.

Poor Alice--as an engineer, she would generally be considered a salaried employee.

It *is* a win for PHB in that he got away with his face still intact, knowing how 'colorful' and 'snakeful' Alice's reactions can be!

@NorthernHick Thanks, you are correct. Except that I didn't put the accent over the 'e', spell check it for me. For the many, many thanks I owe to spell check, I won't berate them for this.
